Is a More Expensive SmartBuy Hotel Booking Really Cheaper?
Published 2026-10-23

A higher hotel price can still offer better value after rewards. It does not mean you pay less today, and a point is not automatically a rupee in cash.
Consider the unverified example in the brief: ₹28,000 direct, or ₹30,500 through SmartBuy. You pay ₹2,500 more upfront through the portal. The claim of being ₹7,650 ahead comes from valuing 10,150 points at ₹1 each and subtracting that entire value from the portal price. That arithmetic works. It leaves out what the direct booking might earn and whether you can use those points at that value.
First, compare the same stay
Match the property, dates, room category, number of guests, meals, payment timing and cancellation deadline. Compare the final amount including taxes and mandatory charges. A non-refundable room is not the same product as a refundable room. Save both dated quotes; neither booking in this example has been independently checked.
Compare both reward routes
Here is a model, not an earned-points promise. Assume an existing eligible Infinia card, one fully eligible charge on each route, a base rate of 5 points per complete ₹150, and enough remaining caps. The base rate is an advertised-rate assumption for this illustration; confirm your exact card's operative reward terms. ₹30,500 has 203 complete ₹150 blocks; ₹28,000 has 186. At 10× total rewards, the model gives 1,015 base plus 9,135 accelerated points through SmartBuy, versus 930 base points direct.
| Illustrative comparison | SmartBuy | Direct |
|---|---|---|
| Cash paid today | ₹30,500 | ₹28,000 |
| Modelled future points | 10,150 | 930 |
| Cost less future value at ₹1/point | ₹20,350 | ₹27,070 |
| Cost less future value at ₹0.30/point | ₹27,455 | ₹27,721 |
On those assumptions, the modelled advantage is ₹6,720 at ₹1 per point, or ₹266 at ₹0.30. These figures precede any extra fees, lost hotel benefits or financing costs. They are future-value comparisons, not a discount on today's bill.

10× includes the base reward
HDFC's hotel offer defines 10× as 1× base plus 9× accelerated points. Do not add another base reward on top. The current detailed SmartBuy Infinia row shows a 15,000 accelerated-point daily limit and a separate 15,000 calendar-month limit. Other SmartBuy spending uses those pools too. Check remaining headroom, not just the headline cap.
The 3,000-point monthly brand-voucher sublimit sits inside the overall pool. The separate 2,00,000-point earning ceiling is per statement cycle, not another SmartBuy bonus allowance. If no accelerated headroom remains, this model falls to 1,015 portal base points versus 930 direct. At ₹1 per point, SmartBuy would then be ₹2,415 worse before other differences.

Future travel value is not statement cashback
The bank's SmartBuy redemption table gives Infinia travel points a ₹1 value, but points can fund at most 70% of an eligible flight or hotel booking. The rest needs the card. For example, spending all 10,150 points against a hypothetical eligible ₹14,500 future booking still requires at least ₹4,350 cash, before fees. It only creates useful value if you actually want that future booking and its price is competitive.
The product page advertises statement cashback at up to ₹0.30 per point. That is a different redemption route, not a guarantee of ₹1 cash. Bonus posting can take up to 90 working days after the transaction month ends under the detailed programme terms. Keep the evidence until points post; returns and cancellations can reduce or reverse rewards.

Subtract what booking direct gives you
Compare card rewards on the direct charge, member pricing, hotel points, qualifying nights, breakfast, credits and cancellation flexibility. Verify eligibility with the named hotel programme rather than assuming all third-party bookings lose every benefit. Value only benefits you would use. Even a modest lost benefit can erase the ₹266 result in the lower-value scenario.
Check partner booking and redemption charges at checkout, including GST. The current MITC exempts Infinia and Infinia Metal from the bank's listed reward/cashback redemption processing charges; that does not establish that every portal or hotel fee is waived. Do not automatically subtract a generic ₹99 plus GST redemption charge for these variants.

A checklist before paying
- Confirm the exact card, qualifying route, eligible charge and reward rounding. Do not count the points-funded portion of a future booking as new eligible card spend without checking its terms.
- Record available daily and calendar-month accelerated caps separately from the statement-cycle earning limit, including spending already made through other SmartBuy partners.
- Read the offer period and exclusions. The detailed programme page currently displays 1 to 31 October 2026; the Yatra listing separately shows validity to 30 June 2027. Those dates do not promise today's terms will stay unchanged.
- Save the room-rate breakdown, taxes, fees, refund rules and offer screen. Confirm when points post and how cancellations affect them.
- Choose a point value you can actually realise, subtract direct-booking value, and pay the credit-card bill in full. Interest or a fee incurred just to chase points changes the comparison.
Decision rule: compare the portal premium with incremental usable reward value, after fees and direct benefits forgone. ₹7,650 is not verified savings. If the result depends on unverified eligibility or a future booking you do not need, treat it as uncertain.
